Benson June Blood Drive Surpasses Goal

The June Benson community blood drive sponsored by Banner Post 109 American Legion and it’s Auxiliary was a success thanks to their devoted donors — 51 units were collected with a goal of 45, said coordinator Helen Smith.

According to Betty Jo Young, the other coordinator, “Collecting 51 units could mean 153 individual lives could be saved, according to past history of The American Red Cross.”

Volunteer at almost every community drive, Shirley Harris, who covers the area called the “canteen,” said, “I donate because I feel it is my duty and my father always said ‘it makes me feel better’.”

Those donating through the double cell program, which is reserved for acute situations such as children with cancer, were Phyllis Edwards, Autumn Futrell and Keith Langdon.

Volunteers assisting the Red personnel provided by members of the American Legion Auxiliary were Hilda Pope, Beverly Godwin, Betty Jo Young, Shirley Harris and Helen Smith.

Names drawn in a donor drawing fuurnished by The American Legion were Shanna Moore, Raymond LaFrancois and Jan Lucas.

The next community drive is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 3.
