Despite the absence of some players for a Future Farmers of America camp at White Lake and others playing basketball for the Dunn PAL, Triton’s footbal program resumed summer workouts on Monday morning.

“We’re going to use this week to fine tune everything we’ve done over the summer,” said Triton coach Ben Penny. “When we hit the ground Monday (Aug. 1 when official practice starts), we want to be a little ahead.

“We don’t have to start out going over how to practice and our expectations. We’ll already know that.”

The third-year Hawks coach feels it has been a productive offseason.

Offensive linemen have been coming in at 6 a.m. and Penny has been pleased with their efforts in conditioning, especially since some also will be playing defense.

Triton opens the season at Cape Fear on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m.

The Colts will be the first of four 4-A opponents the 3-A Hawks will meet in the nonconference portion of the schedule.

Triton’s first home game, with Harnett Central on Sept. 1, also will be on a Thursday night.

Harnett Jamboree

Triton will take part in the Harnett County Jamboree at Campbell on Aug. 11.

The Hawks will match up with Wallace-Rose Hill and Hoke County that evening.

“We’re going to get some good competition to get ready for the season,” Penny said.

Western Harnett also will face the Bulldogs and the Bucks.

Harnett Central and Overhills will line up against Apex and Southern Lee to lead off the scrimmages at 5 p.m.

Western and Triton will have their sessions starting at 7 p.m.
