Harnett County Board of Commissioners approved the commercial rezoning of landowner Johnny Faircloth’s 2.52 acres of property off N.C. 24 on Red Bird Drive and Chipmunk Court.

After being tabled many times over a three-year period, the last time on June 20, this issue was reviewed during June 28 and July 12 work sessions, untabled Monday and unanimously resolved.

Commissioners traveled to the residential area in Johnsonville Township last week and decided to heed to the recomendations of planning board staff and approve commercialization.

The rezoning application was disputed publically for months by members of that community. During June’s public hearing on the matter, five members of the community asked that the board reject it.

represented at Monday’s meeting, but chose not to speak during open forum.

When asked in June about what was planned for the site, Angier real estate agent Jason Bethune spoke on the behalf of Mr. Faircloth.

“He’s looking into putting in a building that’s 200 feet long and 60 feet deep,’” he said. “Some sort of Subway or Sweet Frog … . Some sort of shopping center, strip mall or a little place like that.”

Mr Faircloth said he agreed to fix the road, which according to him restricted residents from receiving loans or building permits.

“There are 42 subdivisions in Harnett County that are upside down on this road deal, and we just want to take one of them off,” he said.
