Recreation Department.
In a statement supplemented with statistics, Mr. Weatherspoon broke down the percentages of participants over the last year.
A total of 1,740 people participated in Angier Rec in 2015-16. Out of them, 742, or 43 percent lived in Angier. Six hundred and fortyone or 37 percent are Harnett County residents. “The other 20 percent comes from Wake County and Johnston County,” Mr. Weatherspoon said, regarding the 357 participants who came from outside of the county.
“Our current parks and recreations budget, in Angier, is just a little over $300,000 a year and that is being payed for by the citizens of Angier … out of our property taxes,” he said. “As northwest Harnett grows, demand for parks and recreation facilities and services are increasing.” Although Mr. Weatherspoon did not specifically address it, The Daily Record reported last month that Western Harnett Youth Athletics is partially funded by a county contribution of $65,000 a year. “We believe that our residents and the residents of northern Harnett County should receive the same funding as any other area of the county,” Mr. Weatherspoon said.
Commissioners did not respond to Mr. Weatherspoon’s request, however further information and statistics on recreation allocation from Harnett County are forthcoming.
