• U.S. Army Chaplain Maj. Richard Bell delivered the Baccalaureate address to the graduating seniors of Linden High School. Members of the senior class were valedictorian Sandra Bethune, salutatorian Lucille Manchen, Peggy Buie, Vera Johnson, Jo Ann McLean, Ann Watts, Louis Wood, Jean Robinson, Dwight Burke, Paul Darden, Pat Faircloth, Joe Giles, Tommy Herring, Tommy Lea, Don McInnis and Roland Renfrow.

• Belk of Dunn advertised ladies’ summer dresses for $9.97 and men’s summer sport coats for $10.

• Mr. and Mrs. C. Mack Smith celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at the Community Building in Chalybeate Springs. The reception was given by their children, Kenneth Smith of Chalybeate Springs, Hal Smith of Coats, Mary Martin McCormick of Jonesboro Heights, Hunter Smith of Fuquay Springs, Mrs. H.C. Wilkerson of Tarboro, C. Mack Smith Jr. of Garner and Phillip Smith of Washington, D.C.

• Harnett County Rural Police raided a still in Johnsonville Township and arrested four men. The five policemen making the raid confiscated 250 gallons of beer and 15 gallons of whiskey.

50 Years Ago

• A grand opening was held for the new Sears Catalog Sales Office in the new Wayne Avenue Shopping Center. The first 100 adults at the opening received a free seven-piece beverage set.

• Congressman Dave Henderson spoke to the 124 graduating seniors at Dunn High School commencement exercises. It was the second largest class ever to graduate from the school.

• Muse Supermarket in Dunn advertised ground beef for 39-cents a pound, bacon for 59-cents a pound and two large heads of lettuce for 25-cents.

• Midshipman 1st Class James R. Levinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Levinson of Benson, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy.

40 Years Ago

• Two retiring teachers, Meda Johnson Tilghman of Dunn and Nellie S. Stewart, were honored at a reception at the District 7 School in Cumberland County. Mrs. Tilghman taught school for seven years and Mrs. Stewart ended a teaching career of 41 years.

• The Erwin High Combo performed at the annual school spring concert. Members of the combo were Phillip West, Tony Spence, Frederick Williams, Giles Fowler, Pam Truelove and Gary Wood.

• Student athletes were the center of attention at the second annual Athletic Awards Banquet held by Harnett Junior High School in Dunn. Receiving awards were Best Defensive Football Player, Marty Hawley; Best Offensive Football Player, James Leggett; Best Offense Softball Player, Pat Holden; Coaches Award for girl’s softball, Barbara Holden; Coaches Award for girl’s basketball, Patricia Leak; Most Valuable Player for girl’s basketball, Geran Matthews; Coaches Award for boy’s basketball, John Willoughby; Most Valuable Player for boy’s basketball, Hugh Bradham; Most Valuable Player for boy’s baseball, Joe Dunn; Coaches Award for baseball, Hugh Bradham; Best Defensive Player for baseball, Chris Goff; Outstanding Cheerleader, Laura Johnson; Sponsors Award, Lynn Jackson; and Skinny Ennis Award, Hugh Bradham.

• Fifty-three Coats High School seniors graduated in the commencement exercises at Coats School. Graduating at the top of the class was Doris Turlington followed by Susan Matthews. Honor students were Karen Barbour, Sharon Clayton, Timothy Davis, Dudley Denning, Diane Flowers, Jenia Rowland, Daphne Stevens, Sharon Strickland, Jimmy Walker and Patsy Young.
