Midway football standout Larry Blanks signed to play at St. Andrews in Laurinburg on Wednesday during a ceremony in the Midway library.

“I like the campus and they have what I want to study (business),” Blanks said.

After playing both sides of the ball during his career with the Raiders, Blanks said the NAIA Knights have him projected as an H-back on offense.

“They run kind if like a T, some spread in there,” said Blanks, who will adapt from Midway’s Wing-T.

Blanks also considered Greensboro, Methodist, Shaw and UNC Pembroke in the recruiting process.

Blanks feels prepared for the next level.

“Coach (Jason) Fussell works us hard,” Blanks said. “Very hard. He also preaches team. That helps.”

Fussell coached Blanks throughout his Midway career.

“Since I started coaching JV, he’s been out there with me,” Fussell said. “He’s been the workhorse on the field. The last two years, he had 1,000-yard seasons (on the varsity). He’s been a team leader.

“ … He’s a good linebacker but didn’t play much there so we could have his legs fresh for offense.”
